The road between Leicester and Ashby de la Zouch was the main thoroughfare through north west Leicestershire. Its development is linked in part with that of the coal industry and so for much of its length is also a coal road as well.
However, much more than goods and services used this road. It was also a road used by Kings and Queens to travel through the research area. At Ashby it joined the Derby to Coventry road and so provided an alternative route for travellers wishing to travel from Derby to Leicester.

| Ashby to Leicester Road |
The road up until the coming of the turnpike had the same route:
From Ashby it went to Ravenstone either via Alton or Packington;
From Ravenstone it went to Bagworth via Donnington le Heath;
From Bagworth it went to Kirby Muxloe and then onto Leicester.
More details will be added as the research project develops.
