What is the Swepstone Way? This is a good question. The Swepstone Way is a name I have coined for a feature that stretches across the research area from just east of the village of Swepstone in a south westerly direction until it reaches – well that is one of the questions that is trying to be addressed by the research – just where does it end?

Another important question is when did it come into existence? An obvious answer may be that this is some form of Roman road that linked the Roman town just north of Ibstock to the Watling Street. This may be correct. However it might also have a much earlier origin.

| Part of the Swepstone Way from Swepstone to Snarestone - Google Earth |
The Swepstone Way can be easily seen on Google Earth and is indistinguishable from other local roads. However, it isn't a modern road but a series off field, parish and district council boundaries, footpaths and bridle paths. In short it is unclear exactly what the Swepstone Way is and this is what the research hopes to clarify.
